This Chinese
character is pronounced ‘rěn’ in Pinyin, and means endure, tolerate, refrain, hold
back, repress. Originally, it expresses that when a person encountered trouble or
unjust things, the first idea normally came into his or her mind is to endure or
tolerate. With the social development, the idea gradually changed. People began
to think that ‘ren’ actually is considered as self-restraint, the original meaning
is misinterpreted to some extent.
