和(hé)

A martial artist showed taiji at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Opening Ceremony

This Chinese character is pronounced ‘hé’ in Pinyin and means harmonious and coordinated. Through the diagram of the supreme ultimate (Tai Ji) and perfectly fused and harmonious diagram system, we sense the original meaning of ‘he’ in a more intuitionistic way. It is the circle in the diagram of the supreme ultimate (Tai Ji), and it is the harmonious object of contradiction, which keeps the unity of oppositeness of male and female principle of the fish shape picture.

Below are included some base meanings of ‘hé’
1. Peace; harmony
2. Peaceful(ly); mild; harmonious(ly)
3. The sum of
4. And

laosiThought of ‘hé’ is from Chapter 42 of TaoDeJing. This thought was put forward by Lao Tzu, 4th-century Chinese philosopher on whose teachings Lao-Tzu based Taoism, founder of Taoist. Below is the full text of Chapter 42 of TaoDeJing:

42. Mind
The Way bears sensation,
Sensation bears memory,
Sensation and memory bear abstraction,
And abstraction bears all the world;
Each thing in the world bears feeling and doing,
And, imbued with mind, harmony with the Way.

As others have taught, so do I teach,
"Who loses harmony opposes nature";
This is the root of my teaching.
