The Inspiration of Creation from Chinese Myth and Legend

Millennia ago the Jade Dragon, and Gold Phoenix had discovered a piece of pure white jade on the fairyland along the Silver River in the heaven. After many years of continual laboring, they transformed it into a perfect jade ball. Anywhere the jade ball shined, green trees and blooming flowers would sprout up. When the news of this precious treasure reached the ears of the Heavenly Empress's ear, she desired to possess it. She ordered her generals to acquire the jade ball for her. When the Jade Dragon and Gold Phoenix demanded the ball back, a huge battle ensued. During the battle the jade ball was dropped to the earth, where it turned into the crystal clear West Lake and Phoenix Mountain. Ever since the battle, Phoenix Mountain has kept a watch over the beautiful jade ball.

About Red Crown Crane

Red-crowned cranes are very communal and live in flocks. They are the second rarest species of crane, the whooping crane of North America being the rarest. There are between 1700 to 2000 red-crowned cranes in all of Eastern Asia. It is one of the world's largest birds, and also one of the largest cranes. These cranes are migratory which explains their various types of food they eat. During the spring and summer the cranes fly east to the wetlands in temperate East Asia. This is where they breed. The cranes winter along rivers and in salt and freshwater marshes in Japan, China, and the Korean Peninsula. The red-crowned cranes are generally monogamous, that is, mated birds stay together throughout the year, and even until one bird dies. Both the male and female build the nest. The female usually lays two eggs that hatch at the same time. Once the eggs hatch, the female is more involved with the domestic affairs while the male is responsible for defense. These cranes are considered to be sacred to the Japanese people, and were declared the national Japanese bird in 1952.

The Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), also called the Japanese Crane or Manchurian Crane , is a large east Asian crane and among the rarest cranes in the world. In some parts of its range, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity and fidelity.

Crane in Chinese Mythology

In China, the Red-crowned Crane is often featured in myths and legends. In Taoism, the Red-crowned Crane is a symbol of longevity and immortality. In art and literature, immortals are often depicted riding on cranes. A mortal who attains immortality is similarly carried off by a crane. Reflecting this association, Red-crowned Cranes are called xian he (pinyin: xiānhè; literally: "fairy crane" or "crane of the immortals"). The Red-crowned Crane is also a symbol of nobility. Depictions of the crane have been found in Shang Dynasty tombs and Zhou Dynasty ceremonial bronzeware. A common theme in later Chinese art is the reclusive scholar who cultivates bamboo and keeps cranes.

Because of its importance in Chinese culture, the Red-crowned Crane was selected by the National Forestry Bureau of the People's Republic of China as a candidate for the title of national animal of China. This decision was deferred due to the Red-crowned Crane's Latin name translation as "Japanese Crane".

About Red Crown Crane

The Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), also called the Japanese Crane or Manchurian Crane, is a large crane and is the second rarest crane in the world.

In East Asia, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity and fidelity. At 140-150 cm (55-60 inches) high, the crane does not make easy prey, for all that it stands out in its natural habitat of marshes and swamps. When it matures, the Red-crowned Crane is snow white with a patch of red skin on its head. This patch of skin becomes bright red when the crane becomes angry or excited. This species is the heaviest crane, typically 7.7–10- kg (17-22 lb), although large Sarus Cranes are taller.The maximum known weight of a male Red-crowned Crane is 15 kg (33 lbs.)

In the spring and summer, the Red-crowned Crane breeds in Siberia and occasionally in northeastern Mongolia (i.e., Mongol Daguur Strictly Protected Area). Normally the crane lays 2 eggs, with only one surviving. Later, in the fall, it migrates in flocks to Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and other countries in East Asia to spend the winter. All Red-crowned Cranes migrate, except for a flock that is resident in Hokkaidō.

The crane eats small amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, insects, and plants that grow in marshes and swamps. The habitats used are marshes, riverbanks, rice fields, and other wet areas

Crane in Japanese Culture

In Japan, this crane is known as the tancho and is said to live for 1,000 years. A pair of Red-crowned Cranes were used in the design for the Series D 1000 yen note (reverse side). In the Ainu language, the Red-crowned Crane is known as sarurun kamuy or marsh kamuy. At Tsurui they are one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

Traditionally, the I Ching and its hexagrams were thought to pre-date recorded history and based on traditional Chinese accounts, its origins trace back to the 3rd to the 2nd millennium BC. Modern scholarship suggests that the earliest layers of the text may date from the end of the 2nd millennium BC, but place doubts on the mythological aspects in the traditional accounts. Some consider the I Ching the oldest extant book of divination, dating from 1,000 BC and before. The oldest manuscript that has been found, albeit incomplete, dates back to the Warring States Period (475–221 BC).

During the Warring States Period, the text was re-interpreted as a system of cosmology and philosophy that subsequently became intrinsic to Chinese culture. It centered on the ideas of the dynamic balance of opposites, the evolution of events as a process, and acceptance of the inevitability of change.

The standard text originated from the Old Text version transmitted by Fei Zhi (c. 50 BC-10 AD) of the Han Dynasty, which survived Qin’s book-burning. However, by the time of the Tang Dynasty the Old Text version became accepted as standard.

Chicken Talisman

In old days the Chinese had the habit of pasting or painting chicken talismans on the doors of their dwellings on the lunar New Year's Day. This habit is still very much alive today in rural areas in Shaanxi Province in northwest China.

An ancient Chinese belief regards the chicken as the variant or emblem of the sun. Thus to paste a talisman in the image of a chicken is like having the sun on the door. The habit gives indirect expression to people's longing for the advent of spring. Chinese ancients also believed that the chicken talisman can help ward off the dismal impact of demons.

From this connection between the chicken and the sun, the ancients gave wings to imagination and invented the image of the Heavenly Chicken that is always the first to announce the sunrise on a daily basis. The lunar New Year's Day is known as "yuandan", or the "first sunrise of the year", and it goes without saying that only the Heavenly Chicken is capable of knowing when the sun rises for the first time of the year and reporting the news to the mundane world. Pasting the chicken talisman on the door is actually a symbolism of the chicken and sun worship.

The chicken talisman is pasted up on the lunar New Year's Day because it is also the Day of the Chicken. As the classic The Book of Divination puts it, "The first day is the day of the chicken, the second day is devoted to the dog, the third day to the pig, the fourth day to the goat, the fifth day to the cattle, the sixth day to the horse and the seventh day to man." This matchup between animals and time was derived from people's understanding of space. Seven is the number of the universe to indicate the east, south, west, north, middle, upper and lower directions. East takes the number one position because it is the direction in which the sun rises and because it is also in accord with the first day of the week. Wood is the symbol for east, where the divine Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and peach trees grow. While the sun rises over the top of the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis tree, the chicken perches in the peach tree. This is why east is matched up with the chicken and becomes the symbol of the day of the first sunrise of the year. In that sense, the chicken talisman entails our remote ancestors' imagination of the universe and their way of keeping time.

In the reign of Emperor the Second of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.), the prime minister Zhao Gao, obsessed with ambitions, was planning to usurp the throne day and night. But he did not know how many of the ministers in the court were allowed to be ordered about by him and how many of them were his opponents. So he thought out a way to test how high his prestige among the ministers was and also to find out who dared to oppose him. One day when court was held, Zhao Gao let someone bring a stag to the court and, with a broad smile on his face, he said to Emperor the Second of the Qin Dynasty:"Your Majesty, here is a fine horse I'm presenting to you." Looking at the animal, Emperor the Second thought that it was obviously a stag and that it couldn't be a horse. So he said smilingly to Zhao Gao:"Mister Prime Minister, you are wrong. This is a stay. Why do you say it is a horse?" Remaining calm, Zhao Gao said:"Will your Majesty please see more clearly? This really is a horse that covers a thousand li a day." Filled with suspicion, Emperor the Second looked at the stag again and said:"How can the antlers be grown on the head of a horse?" Turning around and pointing his finger at the ministers, Zhao Gao said in a loud voice:"if our Majesty do not believe me, you can ask the ministers." The nonsense of Zhao Gao made the ministers totally at a lose, and they whispered to themselves: What tricks was Zhao Gao playing? Was it not obvious whether it was a stag or a horse? But when they saw the sinister smile on Zhao Gao's face and his two rolling eyes which were gazing at each of them, they suddenly understood his evil intentions. Some of the ministers who were timid and yet had a sense of right eousness did not dare to say anything, because to tell lies would make their conscience uneasy and to tell the truth would mean that they would be persecuted by Zhao Gao later. Some ministers with a sense of justice persisted that it was a stag and not a horse. There were still some crafty and fawning ministers who followed Zhao Gao closely in ordinary times. They immediately voiced their support to Zhao Gao, saying to the emperor:"This really in a horse that covers a thousand li a day." After the event, Zhao Gao punished by various means those ministers with a sense of justice who were not obedient to him, even with whole families of some of those ministers executed. This story appears in "The Life of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty" in The Historical Records written by Sima Qian. From this story people have derived the set hrase "calling a stag a horse" to mean deliberately misrepresenting some thing and misleading the public.

This phrase originates from a tang poem written by Gao Shi (pinyin: Gāo Shì; Wade–Giles: Kao Shih, ca. 704–765), was a poet of the Tang Dynasty, and two of whose poems were collected in the popular anthology Three Hundred Tang Poems.

Born into an impoverished family in Hunan Province, Gao eventually became a secretary in the military, enjoying a successful career.

About Tang poetry

Tang poetry (pinyin: Táng shī) refers to poetry written in or around the time of or in the characteristic style of China's Tang dynasty, (June 18, 618 - June 4, 907, including the 690-705 reign of Wu Zetian) and/or follows a certain style, often considered as the Golden Age of Chinese poetry. According to the Quantangshi anthology created under the Kangxi emperor of the Qing Dynasty, there were almost 50,000 Tang poems written by over 2,200 authors. During the Tang Dynasty, poetry continued to be an important part of social life at all levels of society. Scholars were required to master poetry for the civil service examinations, but the art was theoretically available to everyone. This led to a large record of poetry and poets, a partial record of which survives today. Two of the most famous poets of the period were Du Fu and Li Bai.

The Tang Dynasty was a time of major social and probably linguistic upheavals. Thus, the genre may be divided into several major more-or-less chronological divisions, based on developmental stages or stylistic groupings (sometimes even on personal friendships between poets). It should be remembered that poets may be somewhat arbitrarily assigned to these based on their presumed biographical dates (not always known); furthermore that the lifetimes of poets toward the beginning or end of this period may overlap with the preceding Sui Dynasty or the succeeding Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period. The chronology of Tang poetry may be divided into four parts: Early Tang, High Tang, Middle Tang, and Late Tang.

This phrase originates from a tang poem written by Jia Dao (pinyin: Jiǎ Dǎo; Wade–Giles : Chia Tao) (779–843), courtesy name Langxian, was a Chinese poet active during the Tang Dynasty. He was born near modern Beijing; after a period as a Buddhist monk, he went to Chang'an. He became one of Han Yu's disciples, but failed the jinshi exam several times. He wrote both discursive gushi and lyric jintishi. His works were criticised as "thin" by Su Shi, and some other commentators have considered them limited and artificial.

According to Dr. James J.Y. Liu (1926–1986), a professor of Chinese and comparative literature, Jia’s poem The Swordsman "seems...to sum up the spirit of knight errantry in four lines."

About Tang poetry

The poetry of the Tang Dynasty is important for several reasons. It is important in the field of Chinese literature and Chinese poetry, within which it has had especial note. Tang poetry has had an on-going influence on world literature and modern and quasi-modern poetry.

Tang poetry has certain characteristics. Contextually, the fact that the poems were generally intended to be recited in more-or-less contemporary spoken Chinese (now known as Classical Chinese; or, sometimes, as Literary Chinese, in post-Han Dynasty cases) and that the poems were written in Chinese characters are certainly important. Also important are the use of certain typical poetic forms, various common themes, and the surrounding social and natural milieu.

The Tang dynasty time was one of religious ferment, which was reflected in the poetry. Many of the poets were religiously devout. Also, at that time religion tended to have an intimate relation with poetry.

There has been some interest in Tang poetry in the field of gender studies. Although most of the poets were men, there were several significant women. Also, many of the men wrote from the viewpoint of a woman, or lovingly of other men. Historically and geographically localized in Tang Dynasty China, this is an area which has not escaped interest from the perspective of historical gender roles.

In China, the first evidence of horses comes from the “Longshan culture”. Several fire pits dating at about 5000 BCE were excavated in Miaodigou (Henan Province) and found to contain the remains of horses. It is believed that these horses were used for mystical sacrifices and domestic purposes. During the Shang Dynasty (1600 – 1100 BCE), horses were entombed with thier owners to pass over with them into the afterlife. This practise was then replaced with a more humane way for an emperor to “protect or defend” his mausoleum. 1000 years ago, hunting, polo matches and horse performance were already popular activities in the Tang dynasty. Lifelike figures of saddled horses as well as the riders in the Terracotta Army unearthed from the mausoleum of Qinshihuang emperor (r.221 – 210 BC) clearIy indicate the contemporary features of the warhorses and their horsemen.

China invented three of the most important innovations in equestrian history: the horse collar, the stirrup and a reliable and effective harnessing system based on the breast strap. The artistic efforts of Mongolian were channeled into portable works of art such as, bridles, saddles and personal jewellery. They were superb horsemen. Until today, the Mongols spend much of their lives on horseback.

Silk had been traded for horses during the Han Dynasty (157 – 87 BCE). However, China faced several periods where horses were of short supply. Tea was the commodity of trade during the Song Dynasty (681 – 907 CE), and so began the history of “Tea for Horses” markets. Tea production was controlled by China and they attempted to maintain the prices of tea at an artificially high level in order to acquire more horses. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE), these markets were again used when horse populations were once again depleted.

The first fourteen characters on the left are bi yu gu gen sheng zai lin, mei ren xiang zeng bi shuang jin in Chinese pinyin, it is a Chinese tang poem writen by Liu Yuxi(772－842) to express his admiration for the purity and indomitable spirit of bamboo. The others on the left are the personal inscription of our artist’s signature and time of creation.

The bamboo painter often inscribes a poem that accompanies the painting and further elucidates the motif. The poem is often an integral part of the work as a whole. A viewer of the work can compare the calligraphy of the poem with the calligraphy of the painting, as both are typically inscribed with the same brush and reflect a similar mood and state of awareness.

Bamboo's long life makes it a Chinese symbol of longevity, while in India it is a symbol of friendship. The rarity of its blossoming has led to the flowers' being regarded as a sign of impending famine. This may be due to rats feeding upon the profusion of flowers, then multiplying and destroying a large part of the local food supply. The most recent flowering began in May 2006 (see Mautam). Bamboo is said to bloom in this manner only about every 50 years.

In Chinese culture, the bamboo, plum blossom, orchid, and chrysanthemum (often known as méi lán zhú jú) are collectively referred to as the Four Gentlemen. These four plants also represent the four seasons and, in Confucian ideology, four aspects of the junzi ("prince" or "noble one"). The pine (sōng), the bamboo (zhú), and the plum blossom (mé) are also admired for their perseverance under harsh conditions, and are together known as the "Three Friends of Winter" (suìhán sānyǒu) in Chinese culture. The "Three Friends of Winter" is traditionally used as a system of ranking in Japan, for example in sushi sets or accommodations at a traditional ryokan. Pine (matsu) is of the first rank, bamboo (také) is of second rank, and plum (ume) is of the third.

Works of bamboo painting, usually in ink, are a recognized motif or subgenre of East Asian painting. In a work of bamboo painting in ink, a skilled artist and calligrapher will paint a bamboo stalk or group of stalks with leaves. The contrast between the foreground and background, and between the varying textures represented by the stalks and the leaves, gave scope to the painter to demonstrate his or her mastery with an inkpot and a brush.

About Myths and legends of Bamboo

In a Chinese legend, the Emperor Yao Emperor Yao (traditionally c. 2356-2255) was a legendary Chinese ruler, one of the Three Sovereigns and the Five Emperors gave two of his daughters to the future Emperor Shun as a test for his potential to rule . Shun passed the test of being able to run his household with the two emperor's daughters as wives, and thus Yao made Shun his successor, bypassing his unworthy son. Later, Shun drowned in the Xiang River. The tears his two bereaved wives let fall upon the bamboos growing there explains the origin of spotted bamboo. The two women later became goddesses.

From the days of their common origin, Chinese painting and Chinese writing have been allied arts. They use the same equipment and share aims, techniques, and standards. Ever since the beginning, bamboo has been written and also been painted in the same manner, in other words, a work depicting bamboo is both a painting and a piece of calligraphy. There are so-called “bamboo painters” who all their lives paint only bamboo. The bamboo is strong, upright, and dependable. He may bend with the wind, the storm and the rain, but he never breaks. He is a true gentleman of courage and endurance.

The bamboo plant came under close observation by many Asians because of its persistence and vegetative productivity. The plant was especially appreciated by men and women educated in the tradition of Confucius. It came to be seen as an exemplar of moral force, and appreciating the bamboo was seen as an act of self-cultivation. It was said of the ink bamboo painter Wen Tong (Wen T'ung) (1019–1079) was a Northern Song painter born in Sichuan famous for his ink bamboo paintings that "there are whole bamboos in his heart". It means someone has things as a whole well thought out beforehand.

About Myths and legends of Bamboo

Several Asian cultures, including that of the Andaman Islands, believe humanity emerged from a bamboo stem. In the Philippine creation myth, legend tells that the first man and the first woman each emerged from split bamboo stems on an island created after the battle of the elemental forces (Sky and Ocean). In Malaysian legends a similar story includes a man who dreams of a beautiful woman while sleeping under a bamboo plant; he wakes up and breaks the bamboo stem, discovering the woman inside. The Japanese folktale "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" (Taketori Monogatari) tells of a princess from the Moon emerging from a shining bamboo section. Hawaiian bamboo ('ohe) is a kinolau or body form of the Polynesian creator god Kāne.

Bamboo cane is also the weapon of Vietnamese legendary hero Saint Giong – who had grown up immediately and magically since the age of three because of his national liberating wish against An invaders.

An ancient Vietnamese legend (The Hundred-knot Bamboo Tree) tells of a poor, young farmer who fell in love with his landlord's beautiful daughter. The farmer asked the landlord for his daughter's hand in marriage, but the proud landlord would not allow her to be bound in marriage to a poor farmer. The landlord decided to foil the marriage with an impossible deal; the farmer must bring him a "bamboo tree of 100 nodes". But Buddha But appeared to the farmer and told him that such a tree could be made from 100 nodes from several different trees. But gave to him four magic words to attach the many nodes of bamboo: Khac nhap, khac xuat, which means "joined together immediately, fell apart immediately". The triumphant farmer returned to the landlord and demanded his daughter. Curious to see such a long bamboo, the landlord was magically joined to the bamboo when he touched it, as the young farmer said the first two magic words. The story ends with the happy marriage of the farmer and the landlord's daughter after the landlord agreed to the marriage and asked to be separated from the bamboo.

He kept his family name pronunciation (Li = Lee). This is a very common family name in China which also means "plum".

Literally, his given name "Xiao-Long" means "little dragon". This is why you often see the Chinese symbol for for dragon associated with Bruce Lee on various posters etc.

You may also want to know that, the "X" in Romanized Chinese is pronounced like a "sh" sound but with your tongue at the bottom of your mouth. The vowel sound in "Long" is like the English "oh", not like the "ah" sound in the English word "long".

In Chinese daily language, excellent and outstanding people are compared to the dragon while incapable people with no achievements are compared with other, disesteemed creatures, such as the worm. A number of Chinese proverbs and idioms feature references to the dragon, for example: "Hoping one's son will become a dragon" (i.e. be as a dragon).

About the Great Wall

The Great Wall, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. Talking about Chinese paper art, you might first think of Chinese paper cutting. What you might not know is that Chinese paper cutting art is the first type of cutting paper art in the world, sometimes also referred to as “chuang hua”, meaning window flower, though the paper cutting patterns of the Chinese paper cuts are definitely not limited to flowers(an outstanding example being dragon paper cut and paper cutting fish).

With the amazingly exquisite Chinese paper cut art you see, you could easily imagine the dexterous hands of one skillfully maneuvering the scissors to create the Chinese paper cuts, presenting a real piece of Chinese paper cutting art. But the case is not exactly true about talented disabled Chinese artist Hongbing, Yang with Chilture Studio of Disabled Artists.

Walking into disabled Chinese paper cutting artist Hongbing Yang’s home, your eyes will be filled with Chinese paper cuts on the walls and stacking on his bed, with Yang moving his body with great difficulty to welcome his guests.

Yang was born into a poor peasant family, the youngest of four children. At the age of 10 he was diagnosed with ALS disease, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, totally paralyzing him at 16. This disease took his father and an elder brother, who passed away at 23. What is ALS? It's a progressive, fatal disease of the motor neurons that control the skeletal muscles of the body. It results in total paralysis and respiratory failure, and there is no cure.

“Even moving my hand from under the table to above, I need my mom’s help.” It’s just with this pair of hands he created well over two thousand pieces of Chinese paper cutting artwork since 2004. “I saw someone on TV one day demonstrating wonderful Chinese paper cut art and I thought I could do it myself too,” Yang told Chilture, uttering each word with great effort. “Then I asked my sister and brother to buy me books and the most basic tools and started teaching myself Chinese paper cutting.”

“The mobility of my hands is deteriorating every day. For more exquisite and vivid paper cutting patterns, I often choose an engraver in addition to scissors but I have to push the graver with the help of my cheeks.” Yang added. As time passed, it has left his cheeks with dimples. “I sketch first on the red paper and then cut out the patterns with an engraver and scissors. A simple Chinese paper cut takes me about one or two days while a complicate one could even take me a month. I do more paper cutting in summer but less in winter as my fingers are less flexible then,” Yang continues.

From flowers, birds, fish, to mountains and trees; from everyday scenes of life to well-renown figures from ancient Chinese legends and historical stories, and much more, Yang’s collection of Chinese paper cutting incorporates them all in his own meticulous style and with his own perspective of life. Among his more than 2,000 pieces of paper art cutting, three selections stand out when Chilture’s team first visited Yang. Yang’s life couldn’t go without his mother. They take turns to sleep every day. He stays up to 3 to 4 in the morning until his mother gets up to help him to go to bed and turn body while sleeping. With the help of his family, Yang started a shop online in August 2011 but there have been few transactions due to poor managing and the severe lack of market of Chinese folk art in China.

The financial support for disabled is very limited in rural China. The family lives on a monthly 200 yuan (about $32) subsidy and the earnings of the mother from tailoring shoe vamps for people. “Since the first day I decided to devote my life to Chinese paper cutting, I’m determined not to stop. The red thin paper has always been bearing my dreams. My hope now is opening up an outlet for my Chinese paper cutting art and reducing my mom’s heavy burdens. Then I hope to set up training sessions to help more disabled people to learn this skill.”
