A free-hand style of traditional Chinese painting-figure: Meditating on Dao. Dao, Tao or Dao (Chinese:道; pinyin:Dào) is a Chinese word meaning 'way', 'path', 'route', or sometimes more loosely, 'doctrine' or 'principle'. Within the context of traditional Chinese philosophy and religion, Tao is a metaphysical concept originating with Laozi that gave rise to a religion (Tao Chiao; Pinyin, Daojiao) and philosophy (Tao chia; Pinyin, Daojia) referred to in English with the single term Taoism. The concept of Tao was later adopted in Confucianism, Chán and Zen Buddhism and more broadly throughout East Asian philosophy and religion in general. Within these contexts Tao signifies the primordial essence or fundamental nature of the universe.

In the foundational text of Taoism, the Tao Te Ching, Laozi explains that Tao is not a 'name' for a 'thing' but the underlying natural order of the universe whose ultimate essence is difficult to circumscribe. Tao is thus "eternally nameless" (Dao De Jing-32. Laozi) and to be distinguished from the countless 'named' things which are considered to be its manifestations.

Shuai said: "These years I tend consciously or unconsciously to paint some Buddhists sitting alone in meditation. Maybe this represents the mindset of a young person at my age that tends to contemplate life."

chinese-disabled-painting-artistAbout Disabled Artist Shuai Liu

Shuai Liu is a budding Chinese painter of traditional Chinese brush painting fighting cerebral palsy. Confined to his bed and wheelchair in a small backward village in North China, Shuai is self taught in painting and could occasionally receive instructions from some local renowned painters.

Shuai paints left-handed on rice paper and mainly works with black and colored ink and uses both the two main techniques in traditional Chinese painting-Shui Mo, freehand or watercolor or brush painting, and Gong Bi, meticulous or court-style painting. The green-color landscape paintings are among Shuai’s unique styles.

Shuai has various inspirations: a memory, a vision, an image, others’ paintings, a villager, his mom and dad, a cat or dog, swallows nesting under the roof of his house, and even himself. Therefore, the subjects of his paintings vary much.
